Part of developing a website includes the desire for it to drive people to your page and then convert those people into customers.
With the ever-evolving world of technology, it is necessary to keep adding content and do some new web design on what you started to ensure it is still producing results.
It is something that is referred to as a site audit, and ideally, it should be done at least once a year. If you aren’t familiar with doing a site audit, there are professionals out there that can do it for you.
You may even have your own IT person that can handle it for you. Share on X
If you think that you’re ready to take on the task yourself, there is a simple checklist that you should follow to make sure that you cover all the critical parts to get a quality site audit report in the end.
There are also website audit tools out there that can assist you through the process.
Assessing The Content On Your Page
During your site audit, you should go through your entire website and check every blog article, landing page, or other pieces of content that have been posted and is still active.
Make a list of all of them so that you can check to ensure they contain all the information necessary to do the job they are meant to do.
Check that everything is up-to-date and relevant by updating old or incorrect data.
There should be no duplicate content on your pages. You want unique and original information displayed because that’s what’s going to rank highly in search engines.
There are plagiarizing checkers that you can utilize to be sure everything is fresh and not copied.
There are Google penalties applied if their tools finds copied content.
While you are doing that, check for misspellings and grammar errors as well. Anything like that will discredit your page and authority.
You want all of your content to engage your reader and market to them the services you are offering. It should also be targeted to your specific audience and full of material that is personable to them.
You should also be sure that there isn’t a ton of distracting ads on any page. That’s going to turn people away quickly.
Checking For SEO
SEO might be the essential part of your website. SEO is what ranks you in search engines and gets you noticed.
You can utilize an SEO audit tool to check for keywords to make sure the ones you have are quality Keywords. Stuffing a ton of keywords in your articles doesn’t work anymore and it is just bad for your site.
If your site is new, you might want to use a few long tail keywords instead.
Sales and leads are going to be generated with calls-to-action, marketing, and landing pages that are optimized.
Your SEO audit tool will be able to help with that as well. Check that you have a simple and clean URL structure that fits well through the entirety of your website.
Your landing page URL should also contain the keyword you are going after. Be sure you include internal links to other pages.
The Technical Assessment Of Your Site Audit
Finally, it’s time to wrap things up with a technical assessment of your website. This part of the site audit is going to be the most difficult, so you may want to hire someone to do it for you.
If you think you can handle it on your own, you need to know what you are trying to do.
Check to make sure that your site loads up quickly. It should be friendly to use as well. Anything that is slow or difficult to access drives people away.
It also needs to be optimized to be viewed on a mobile device. More people use their phones rather than a PC these days to look up information, and you want to be sure they can see everything on your website from mobile.
You may have broken links that lead to error pages from old links you used.
Check each link to be sure it still works. You don’t want to send your visitors on through to a dead end.
There is something called a robots.txt file, and if it’s not working correctly, it could keep web crawlers away from reaching you.
Your server and loading times should be fast, read about the best hosting company, and the pages shouldn’t be too big either.
The End Result
It might seem a bit daunting to go through this site audit process at first. It may even take you several hours to get it done.
However, all the effort is going to be well worth it when you end up with a properly functioning website for your business that ranks first on Google and gets you to reach the traffic and customers you are trying to reach.
