The core trade-off: incumbent suite vs specialist
The Semrush AI Toolkit is the incumbent-suite play: AI visibility bolted onto the mature platform you use for rankings, keywords and backlinks. One login, one workflow, one invoice. The dedicated GEO tools are specialists: they do AI-answer tracking and little else, but they tend to cover more engines and cost less on their own.

The pricing reality
This changed in 2026, and it changes the answer. The $99/mo standalone AI Visibility toolkit no longer exists. Semrush has folded AI features into the plan ladder itself, which I re-read at source on 5 September 2026:
- SEO, $139/mo ($117.33 on annual): 5 sites, 500 keywords, and the AI layer proper: AI search tracking, AI sentiment, AI visibility reports and custom prompt monitoring.
- Starter, $199/mo ($165.17): the above plus 50 prompts daily, AI brand performance on one domain, 300 AI visibility reports a day, an AI-ready Site Audit and MCP access.
- Pro+, $299/mo ($248.17): 15 sites, 1,500 keywords, 100 prompts daily, historical data, content optimization and cannibalization analysis.
- Advanced, $549/mo ($455.67): 40 sites, 5,000 keywords, 200 prompts daily, SEO share of voice and API access.
There is no longer a way to buy Semrush AI visibility on its own. The floor is a $139/mo Semrush subscription, and that single fact does most of the work in this comparison. The honest framing is no longer “$99 against $20 to $99, not a cost blowout in either direction”. It is $139/mo minimum against $20 for RankScale Essentials or $29 for Otterly: a seven-fold gap at the bottom of the range.
That does not make Semrush a bad buy. It makes it a different kind of buy. You are no longer purchasing an AI-visibility tool that happens to come from Semrush; you are purchasing a Semrush subscription that now includes AI visibility. If you were going to pay for Semrush anyway, the AI layer arrives at no marginal cost, which is the strongest version of the case for it. If you were not, you are paying $139/mo for a classic SEO suite in order to reach a feature a specialist sells for $20.
Pick Semrush AI Toolkit if…
- You already pay for Semrush, in which case the AI layer costs you nothing extra and a second vendor, login and invoice buys you very little.
- You are choosing an SEO platform anyway and the AI features tip a decision you were already making on rank tracking, keywords and backlinks.
- You want AI visibility next to your rank tracking, keyword and backlink data in one place.
- You’re an agency already running client SEO in Semrush and want AI reporting in the same dashboards.
Pick a dedicated GEO tool if…
- You’re starting fresh and don’t use Semrush. The integration edge is the whole case for the suite, and it does not apply to you, so you would be buying a $139/mo SEO platform to reach a feature that costs $20 elsewhere.
- You want more AI engines: RankScale markets 17+ (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, AI Overviews, Copilot and more), well beyond the toolkit’s clearly-stated ChatGPT + Google AI Mode.
- You want the cheapest way in: dedicated tools start at ~$20 (RankScale Essentials) or $29 (Otterly), against a $139/mo floor. That gap widened in 2026 rather than narrowing.
My honest recommendation
If Semrush is already your home base, the AI layer is now simply part of what you pay for, and adding a second vendor to duplicate it would be hard to justify. That case got stronger when the standalone toolkit disappeared.
If you’re choosing from zero, the case got weaker by exactly the same move. The integration advantage does not apply to you, and the entry price for the capability went from $99 to $139 while dedicated tools stayed at $20 to $29 with wider engine coverage. Start with the specialist, and fold AI visibility into a bigger suite later if and when you are buying that suite for its own reasons.
